When Did We Lose ‘In God We Trust’? Country Music Legend Dolly Parton Reveals Her Faith and Frustration

In a recent interview, country music great Dolly Parton was very honest about how she deals with anger and how she feels about what’s going on in politics right now.

Parton talked about her new record, Rockstar, and her new book, Behind the Seams: My Life in Rhinestone, in a recent interview with Nancy O’Dell on TalkShopLive.

On her record Rockstar, which will come out in November, Lizzo, Kid Rock, Ringo Starr, Paul McCartney, Stevie Nicks, Sting, and Elton John will all be on it.

But the 77-year-old says she felt “very led” to write a song on the record called “World on Fire.”

Parton sings in one line, “I don’t know what to think about us / When did we lose ‘In God We Trust’?” God, what are we going to do? If God isn’t listening and we can’t hear either?”

The rest of the song says, “Don’t get me started on politics/Now how are we supposed to live in a world like this/Greedy leader, present and past…Now tell me what’s true. Have we all lost sight of what’s right and what’s wrong? How do we bridge this huge gap? Do we care enough to even try?

Parton told the TalkShopLive host that the song wasn’t an attack on politics, but rather a way for her to talk about how frustrated she is with what’s going on in the world.

“This was important, but it had nothing to do with politics,” she said. “I did say lawmakers are greedy, but that’s true everywhere…No one is paying attention to us. With all of our greed and hatred, we are just letting the world burn down around us. And I kept it all inside, so I had to say something because I thought I should.”

Then, Parton was asked what she does when she feels angry.

“I don’t lose my temper, but I use my temper,” said Parton. “Of course, I’ve lost it a few times, but it’s not that I’m losing my anger, it’s that I’m trying to use it because there are some people you just have to stand up to. Because if they don’t know, for someone like me to raise my voice to people, that’s not what they’re used to.”

The artist who has won a Grammy Award has been open about how her faith in God guides her life.

Parton told Fox News, “My faith affects everything I do because I really do believe that with God, anything is possible.” “So, I always ask God to bless what I do and the people I work with, to bring all the good things and people into my life and get rid of the bad ones.”

The famous singer said that she tries to “love through love” and that her faith has been very important to her life and work.

“I just think that my spirituality has been a guiding light in my life and a source of strength, really, in my creative energy,” she said. “And my spiritual energy has been a big part of what has kept me going and productive all these years.”

Last December, Parton made news with her hit song “Go to Hell,” in which she angrily told the devil to “go to hell” on national TV.

“Go to hell in a handbasket with your wars and politics, your lust and your greed, because heaven is waiting for me,” she sang. “You’re a cheat, a liar, a scoundrel, and a thief.”

Parton says that her song “Don’t Make Me Have to Come Down There” came from a dream that God gave her.

“I had a dream that God was standing on a mountain and looking down at us while saying, “Don’t make me come down there.”” “It woke me up, so I got up and started writing this song over a period of weeks and months.”

In the song, she talks about “politics, earthquakes, erratic weather, pandemics, war, and hate” and tells people to “bridge the great divide” and pray to God.
