T.D Jakes – Founder Of The Potter’s House “Non-denominationl Church”

Thomas Dexter Jakes, also known as T. D. Jakes, is an American Christian preacher who was born on June 9, 1957. He is the head pastor of The Potter’s House, an American megachurch that doesn’t have a specific faith. The Potter’s Touch shows Jakes’s church services and Evangelical talks. He has written many books and also makes movies.

Thomas Dexter Jakes was born in South Charleston, West Virginia, on June 9, 1957. He grew up in the nearby town of Vandalia.

Jakes was changed and ordained in Oneness Pentecostalism, but in an interview with Mark Driscoll in 2012, he said that he believes in the Trinity. Jakes did not, however, believe that each person in the Trinity is eternal, which is something that Oneness churches do not believe.[3][4]

Jakes is a supporter of not having sexual relationships. He has talked about this on Good Morning America and Dr. Phil.[5]

Religious Belief

Jakes said in 2015 that his views on being gay and LGBT rights are changing. But Jakes said that his words were taken out of context and that, even though he doesn’t agree with same-sex marriage, he “respects the rights that this country gives to those who disagree.”

Ministerial Journey

In 1982, when he was 25, Jakes became the leader of Greater Emanuel Temple of Faith, a church with ten members that met in a storefront in Smithers, West Virginia. In 1988, he joined the church group started by Bishop Sherman Watkins and called Higher Ground Always Abounding Assemblies. Jakes moved to South Charleston, West Virginia, in 1990, and the number of people in his church grew again, to 300. He went to Cross Lanes, West Virginia, in the year 1993.

In 1995, he started the company “TDJ Enterprises,” which puts out his books and makes his movies. From 1995 to 1996, Jakes was the host of “Get Ready,” a weekly radio and TV show that was shown all over the country because it was syndicated.[9] Jakes started The Potter’s House, an open church, in Dallas, Texas, in 1996. The Potter’s House is on a 34-acre campus on a hilltop. It has a 5,000-seat auditorium and offices for workers and staff.

Jakes went with President George W. Bush to the places where Hurricane Katrina had caused a lot of damage in 2005. On January 20, 2009, Jakes led a prayer service at St. John’s Church in Washington, D.C. for President Barack Obama.

Jakes worked with Phil McGraw, Jay McGraw, and CBS Television Distribution in 2009 to start a liberal, syndicated talk show. However, the show never aired because of economic problems in the syndicated television market.

In July 2015, Tegna, Inc. and Debmar-Mercury stated that Jakes would host a test run of a new secular talk show called T. D. Jakes from August 17 to September 11 on Tegna stations in Atlanta, Cleveland, Dallas, and Minneapolis. On May 10, 2016, Tegna said that Jakes’s show would start airing on September 12 in more than 50 cities around the country. Due to low numbers and low clearances, the talk show was canceled on March 15, 2017.

Legacy

PBS Religion and Ethics Newsweekly has named Jakes one of America’s “Top 10 Religious Leaders.” On the cover of the September 17, 2001, issue of Time, which showed Jakes, the question “Is This Man the Next Billy Graham?” was posed.

At the 46th Grammy Awards in 2003, Jakes’ album A Wing and a Prayer won the “Best Gospel or Chorus Album” award. He has also been nominated for a Grammy and a Dove Award for his gospel record Live at The Potter’s House. In 2004, he got the President’s Award from the NAACP. Jakes was chosen to be on Oprah’s 2016 SuperSoul100 list of leaders and innovators.

Personal Life

Jakes had his DNA looked at on the PBS show African American Lives. His Y gene showed that he comes from the Igbo people of Nigeria. The history of his family suggests that he is also related to them through his grandma.

Bishop Jakes is married to Serita Jamison (they got married in 1982), and they have been happy together ever since. One of their children is Pastor Sarah Jakes.
