Larry Stevens Furtick Jr., who was born on February 19, 1980, is a preacher, author, and songwriter for Elevation Worship. He is an evangelical Christian American Baptist. He started and is the head pastor of Charlotte, North Carolina’s Elevation Church.
Educational Background
Furtick was born and raised in the South Carolina town of Moncks Corner, where he also went to high school. After reading the book Fresh Wind, Fresh Fire by Jim Cymbala when he was 16, he felt called to be a preacher in a big city. He got a Bachelor of Arts in speech from North Greenville University. He then went to Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and got a Master of Divinity.
The Ministry
In 2004, Furtick was the music leader at Christ Covenant Church, a Baptist church in Shelby, North Carolina. In 2006, he went to Charlotte, North Carolina, where he and seven other families started Elevation Church. On February 5, 2006, the church held its first meeting.
As a songwriter, he helped start the music group Elevation Worship in 2007. Since then, they have been nominated for GMA Dove and Grammy Awards, and their album Old Church Basement won a Grammy.
In 2007, he got a lot of attention when his church gave $5, $20, and even $1,000 to its members in packages and told them to use the money to help other people.
Furtick has spoken at events all over the world, such as Bill Hybels’ Global Leadership Summit in 2011, Ed Young Jr.’s C3 Conference in 2012, Brian Houston’s Hillsong Conference in 2012, and Phil Pringle’s Presence Conference in 2012 and 2013.Furtick also took part in James MacDonald’s shows The Elephant Room 1 and The Elephant Room 2.In 2016, Furtick was named to Oprah’s SuperSoul100 list of important leaders and people with big ideas.
In 2012, Furtick started an outreach programme at Elevation Church called the M1 Initiative because 1,000 kids in local schools needed a mentor. Furtick said, “We’ve always said we want to be a blessing to our city and help our leaders by giving them a reliable volunteer force.” More than 1,600 members answered the call and said they would help a child during the 2012–2013 school year.
Furtick has promised to give away 12 percent of what people give to Elevation Church to help national and international outreach activities.
The Public And The News
Furtick is a best-selling author in the New York Times. He has also given clothes and items to families in need as part of different charity efforts.
In 2013, Furtick has refused to answer questions about his income, his tax-free housing allowance, how much he makes from books and speaking fees, and how the church is run. Elevation has said that Furtick gives the church a lot of the money he makes from writing books.
They say that he arranges for the church to buy his books straight from the publisher so that Elevation can get an author’s discount and keep the money from sales. They have also said that Furtick’s distributor pays the church to make promotional materials for his books.
Elevation has stated that Furtick’s salary is decided by a Board of Overseers made up of other megachurch pastors. They vote on his salary based on a compensation study done by a company outside of Elevation, and Furtick does not vote on his own salary.
On October 2, 2020, the “Believer’s Voice of Victory” programme from Kenneth Copeland Ministries was replaced by programming from Steven Furtick.
